Freesia’s symbolise “innocence and trust.” This relation of Iris flowers is native to South Africa.
Freesias are a smaller cut flower. The main colours available are; white, yellow, red, pink and sometimes orange. Some have a delightful fragrance particularly red and pink types.
Choose a bunch which has several flowers on each stem and where some of the buds are open. Avoid bunches with brown flower tips as this means they may have been water stressed. Freesias are very sensitive to ethylene. Keep them away from fruit, car exhausts and cigarette smoke. Cut a minimum of 2cm off the stem, strip the bottom leaves off, and put in cold water with a flower preservative. Change water daily for optimum lifespan.
Freesia’s are available most of the year.
