Apples

There are more than 7000 varieties of apples with more than 100 grown globally for commercial use. Australia is a very healthy disease and pest free apple growing enviroment and apples are grown throughout Australia with Victoria being the biggest single producer.

Selection and Storage

What type of eating apple to choose should be dictated by personal preference and what is in season.  Choose Apples that are firm with unmarked skin. Apples keep best in the crisper section of the refrigerator.

Availability

Most Apples are harvested in Autumn-Winter then kept in Controlled Atmosphere (CA) throughout the rest of the year. Some Apples like Granny Smith and Pink Lady keep better in CA than others and are consistently good throughout the year.

Using

All apples are good for eating depending upon your preference. For cooking Granny Smith are ideal. Rub cut apple skin with lemon juice to prevent discolouration

Nutrition Information

Apples are low GI and very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium they are a good source of Dietary Fiber and Vitamin C.
