Look for a coconut that is heavy for its size with no mould or mildew. Avoid coconuts with any liquid leaking out of the three black eyes at the top. When you pick up the coconut you should feel the water sloshing around. Coconuts can be stored at room temperature for up to six months. Coconut meat (removed from the shell) can be kept refrigerated for about four days. The meat and water from a coconut can be used to make coconut milk while the water can be drunk and has gained popularity as a drink. Coconuts are available all year round.
