Choose fruit with good colour which can be red, yellow or purple depending on variety with the flesh yields slightly it is ready. Flesh is tough and not pleasant so either halve and scoop out flesh or poach and remove skin before eating. Flavour of the pulp can be compared to a cross between a tomato and passionfruit. Can be used to make jams, chutneys as a stuffing for lamb or in desserts. Australian fruit is available in winter-spring and may be available at other times of the year. Imported fruit is available when Australian fruit is not.
