Pomelo's
Also called Pumelo, or pomellos they are similar in shape to a grapefruit but larger with thicker, softer skin and pale pink, white or yellow flesh. A delicious alternative to grapefruit with a less bitter flavour and lots of juice. Eat for breakfast, juice or use in salads.
Tamarillos
Availability, Selection and Storage
Choose fruit with good colour which can be red, yellow or purple depending on variety with the flesh yields slightly it is ready.
Using
Flesh is tough and not pleasant so either halve and scoop out flesh to eat or poach and remove skin before eating. Flavour of the pulp can be compared to a cross between a tomato and passionfruit. Can be used to make jams, chutneys as a stuffing for lamb or in desserts.
Availability
Australian fruit is in winter-spring as well at other times of year. Imported fruit is also available with New Zealand being a main grower.
Nutrition Information
Tamarillos are a good source of vitamin C and dietary fibre.
Tangelo's
A cross between mandarin and grapefruit these have a round shape with a raised bump on the stem end. Tangelo are a juicy, easy to peel fruit with few seeds. Available Winter to mid Spring.
