Lemons
Types
The main lemons commercially grown in Australia are Eureka and Lisbon lemons, but many more varieties are grown in backyards and home orchards. Meyer lemons appear for a short period and are a lemon-orange hybrid that is sweet and juicer and ideal for desserts.
Selection, Storage and Availability
Australian lemons have their peak season in Autumn but are available from March-December. For the rest of the year imported fruit is available. Select firm, yellow skinned fruit. They keep well at room temperature or in the fridge.
Uses
Lemons are a very versatile fruit that can be used in sauces, dressings, drinks, sorbets, icing, and desserts. Toss or brush sliced banana (or avocado) with lemon juice to prevent browning, before adding to a salad.
Nutrition Information
Lemons have many vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus and potassium.
