Longan

About

This Asian fruit is closely related to the lychee and rambutan. Longan translates  as "dragon eye" the white peeled fruit resembling a eyeball with the black seed showing through like a pupil. The longan has inedible thin yellow/brown skin and a sweet musky flavour.

Selection and Storage

Choose fresh plump looking longans. Ripen at room temperature and then store in the refrigerator.

Availabililty

October- March.

Using

Squeeze open the skin and eat fresh or in fruit salads. Longans are used in East Asian cusine in snacks, soups, desserts and sweet and sour foods. Dried Longan guìyuán in mandarin is often used in Chinese cooking and in herbal medicine.
